GSM cell phones operate on one of the newest high-speed mobile communications protocols available. It was GSM cell handsets that initially allowed for low-cost text messaging services, now a typical feature of other cellular communications standards as well. Industry analysts estimate that up to a full eighty percent of the earth uses GSM for their daily wireless needs, serving well over four billion persons in more than two hundred countries and territories. The widespread recognition of GSM also allows for roaming agreements between mobile carriers so that their clients can enjoy uninterrupted service in many distinct parts of the world.
